ANIMAL RESCUE KERALA
www.animalrescuekerala.org/
Though many are well aware of the problems of human poverty in India, far less international
attention is paid to the sorry state of the urban wildlife also struggling to survive there.  Animal
suffering is by no means a more significant problem than that of the human populace, but in many
ways, it's much simpler to address, and can easily co-exist with humanitarian efforts.  Animals have
only a few fundamental needs, and in a third world economy, the cost of basic care is incredibly low.

Given common local attitudes and mass poverty, the absence of animal rights remains a problem
often dismissed by residents.  Although there are some natively based organizations dealing with
the problem, it remains a situation ripe for compassion and support from individuals outside the
local cultural and economic vantage point.

Animal Rescue Kerala is a foreign run volunteer organization charged with the humane protection,
care and management of both stray and wild animals in the South Indian state of Kerala.  They
regularly find homes for abandoned puppies, and operate a capture, neuter and release program
for street dogs.

At ARK, It takes less than $10 US to sterilize and vaccinate one animal against rabies, and they help
about 60 dogs a month, so just a small donation can go very far.

In most 1st world countries, a stray animal dying in the street can always be taken somewhere.  But
with shelters in India being less than abundant, travelers there are often left with a difficult and
disempowering choice: either watch the animals die slowly, or ignore the situation entirely.

If you find your compassion invoked by any of this, please visit the site above, and donate a few
dollars.

Why Jeremiah Hill Photography supports Animal Rescue Kerala:

In Jeremiah's travels to India, the plight of the animals has struck a chord on several occasions.
He's seen both dogs and puppies being beaten with poles, run over, or kicked without remorse.
He's also witnessed dogs stumbling about, internal organs exposed, with 2-inch wide wounds
infested with maggots.  Such
maggot wounds can kill within days if left untreated.  Click here to see
other challenges faced by the Rescue.

In another life, with more time on our hands, we would be very interested in setting up an
organization like the Kerala Animal Rescue in Varanasi, where the dog population is perhaps the
most out of control.  In the meantime, we are fully supportive of any organization with the courage
and dedication to delve headlong into this tricky issue, which stretches across the entirety of India.
