NABIYA CAT SHELTER - SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
www.nabiya.org
NABIYA is a cat shelter located in the Yongsan district of Seoul, Korea.  At Nabiya, rescued and
abandoned cats are cared for until they find a permanent, loving home.

In Korea, for various cultural reasons, cats are often mistrusted and disliked.  As a result,
domesticated feline pets are an atypical presence in the average Korean household.

Occasionally, cats taken in as kittens are later released onto the street to fend for themselves, once
they pass the 'cute' stage.  Though rare, cats are occasionally captured and boiled for use in
Chinese medicine, said to be helpful in the treatment of arthritis.  On some occasions, street cats
can be treated with disdain, neglect and occasional abuse, particularly by older Koreans.  As a
result, the strays one does see tend to be skittish and avoid human contact during their often short
lifespans.

As an independent, entirely volunteer run shelter, Nabiya participates in active street cat rescue
programs.  Occasionally, they are also able to save some of the few cats secretly scheduled to
meet their demise in the Chinese medicine shops.

At present, the shelter itself is a modified 3 bedroom apartment occupied by about 40 cats at any
given time.   They also have an extensive fostering program in which volunteers temporarily take
care of cats in their own homes.

While Nabiya is run and supported locally by Koreans, foreign concern and funding of Nabiya is
particularly welcome and needed given the unique cultural attitudes toward cats.  The shelter is in
need of donation money (for operating costs, food, and litter), volunteers, and people in Seoul to
foster their cats.

"Nabi" literally means butterfly in Korean, but also often refers to a cat, sort of an endearment name
in Korean. "Ya" is a suffix that comes after a person's or a pet's name.
