I was first inspired to visit Thailand after repeated viewings of The Beach in 1999. It's the story of a lone backpacker named Richard
who gives up his personal history to go in search of a real-life adventure in Thailand's southern islands. While the third act of the film
turns cautionary, I was intrigued by the possibilities suggested in the second, namely that such visceral life experiences still exist in the
world.
Though nothing at all like that film, my own Thai adventures have led me to beautiful Islands, beaches, and sunsets. There is little I
can say to add to the reputation of this tropical paradise, suffice to say that the good far outweighs the bad.
For various reasons, I've spent more time in Bangkok than I'd have liked. That said, I found it more and more hospitable the longer I've
stayed.
If you are planning any extended first-time trip to SE Asia, Thailand is a great place to start. It's a bit rough around the edges, with more
than it's fair share of poverty and grime, but not so much as to cause a major jolt of culture shock. To make things easier, the Thais
have a very laid back way of interacting with Western culture. Most locals can relate very easily to travelers, making your exploration a
little gentler than places less familiar with outsiders.
It's a good place to learn the art of haggling, and to ease into the realities of SE Asian life.
Many people have trouble leaving.
